La battaglia di Dunkerque si svolse tra il 26 maggio ed il 4 giugno 1940 nella prima fase della grande offensiva in Occidente sferrata dalle truppe tedesche della Wehrmacht a partire dal 10 maggio durante il primo periodo della seconda guerra mondiale. Dopo la cosiddetta strana guerra , la campagna di Francia iniziò con la travolgente avanzata delle Panzer-Divisionen attraverso le Ardenne ed oltre la Mosa; dopo aver sbaragliato le deboli formazioni francesi schierate in questo settore del fronte, le forze corazzate tedesche avanzarono rapidamente verso ovest raggiungendo già il 20 maggio le coste della Manica, tagliando fuori in Belgio e nel nord della Francia l'intero Gruppo d'armate n.1 alleato, costituito dalle migliori armate francesi e dal Corpo di spedizione britannico.
