La città di Metz in Lorena ha una storia di oltre 2000 anni come base militare o come fortezza. Per secoli è stata una delle città fortificate più importanti d'Europa.
Metz è sempre stata un importante nodo di traffico: qui si incontrano quattro strade principali (provenienti da sud, est e ovest) e qui il Seille si immette nella Mosella. A partire dal 1845, la Ferrovia Orientale Francese costruì una rete ferroviaria nell'est della Francia. Circa nel 1852, Metz fu collegata alla linea ferroviaria Parigi–Strasburgo; nel 1859 fu messa in funzione la linea ferroviaria Metz–Lussemburgo.
