La Torre del Tempio faceva parte di una serie di edifici fortificati costituenti la fortezza parigina costruita dall'Ordine dei Templari a partire dal 1240, Luigi IX regnante. Dopo alterne vicende, soppresso l'Ordine nel 1314, la torre divenne una prigione. La sua celebrità è dovuta al fatto che durante la rivoluzione francese in essa vennero incarcerati, fra gli altri, anche i membri della famiglia reale francese fra il 1792 e il 1793: ogni regime ha la sua Bastiglia e la repubblica scelse il Tempio. Situata nel III arrondissement di Parigi, la torre fu fatta abbattere da Napoleone Bonaparte nel 1808.
