Installata nel 1898, la fontana è sormontata da una statua in bronzo di Auguste Bartholdi raffigurante Lazzaro di Schwendi (1522-1583). Demolita nel 1940, la fontana fu ricostruita nel dopoguerra con una vasca più piccola e un diverso orientamento, per ospitare nuovamente la statua in Place de l'Ancienne Douane
Lazzaro di Schwendi, condottiero al servizio dell'imperatore Massimiliano II tra il 1564 e il 1568, si recò a combattere i turchi in Ungheria, da dove si dice abbia riportato il vitigno Tokay. Auguste Bartholdi si ispirò a questa leggenda per realizzare la sua statua di Schwendi che regge una vite.
