Installato nel 1890 nei locali dell'Istituto di Scienze della Terra, nel cuore del campus dell'ex università imperiale costruita sotto Guglielmo II, il Museo è uno dei più importanti della provincia per la ricchezza delle sue collezioni (circa 30.000 minerali). Il suo ruolo è stato principalmente associato alla ricerca scientifica e alla formazione dei mineralogisti.
L'origine della collezione è il Gabinetto di Storia Naturale di un professore di medicina di Strasburgo. Dopo la sua morte, nel 1800, la città lo trasformò in un museo, prima di scioglierlo nel 1880 a favore delle collezioni scientifiche della nuova università.
