Il cimitero tedesco di Maissemy contiene 30.478 soldati. 15.000 sono raggruppati in due fosse comuni. Gli altri 15.478 (compresi 54 sconosciuti) sono sepolti sotto lapidi, spesso incise su entrambi i lati con i nomi di 4 o 5 combattenti. Molti di loro sono morti nelle 3 battaglie della Somme, dal giugno al novembre 1916 e nella primavera e nell'estate del 1918. Questo cimitero tedesco (il secondo della Prima Guerra Mondiale dopo Neuville-Saint-Vaast, vicino ad Arras, che contiene quasi 45.000 tombe) fu creato nel 1924 dalle autorità militari francesi, che lo concessero ai tedeschi nel 1929. Il memoriale fu inaugurato nel 1935. Le attuali lapidi in granito belga risalgono al 1972.
