El cementerio alemán de Maissemy contiene 30.478 soldados. 15.000 están agrupados en 2 fosas comunes. Los otros 15.478 (incluidos 54 desconocidos) están enterrados bajo lápidas, a menudo grabadas a ambos lados con los nombres de 4 o 5 combatientes. Muchos de ellos murieron en las 3 batallas del Somme, de junio a noviembre de 1916 y en la primavera y el verano de 1918. Este cementerio alemán (el segundo de la Primera Guerra Mundial después del de Neuville-Saint-Vaast, cerca de Arras, que contiene casi 45.000 tumbas) fue creado en 1924 por las autoridades militares francesas, que lo cedieron a los alemanes en 1929. El memorial se inauguró en 1935. Las actuales lápidas belgas de granito datan de 1972.
