Op de Duitse begraafplaats in Maissemy liggen 30.478 soldaten. 15.000 zijn gegroepeerd in 2 massagraven. De andere 15.478 (inclusief 54 onbekenden) liggen begraven onder grafstenen, vaak aan beide kanten gegraveerd met de namen van 4 of 5 strijders. Velen van hen stierven in de 3 gevechten aan de Somme van juni tot november 1916 en in de lente en zomer van 1918. Deze Duitse begraafplaats (de tweede van de Eerste Wereldoorlog na Neuville-Saint-Vaast bij Arras, met bijna 45.000 graven) werd in 1924 aangelegd door de Franse militaire autoriteiten, die het in 1929 aan de Duitsers schonken. Het monument werd ingehuldigd in 1935. De huidige Belgische granieten grafstenen dateren uit 1972.
