Il Passo di Tenda, situato a 1.871 m sopra il livello del mare, collega Tenda con Cuneo nelle Alpi Meridionali. Il passo stesso è, per motivi storici, sul territorio francese.
Il passo separa le Alpi Marittime (massiccio Mercantour-Argentera) dalle Alpi Liguri e collega la valle della Roya a sud con la valle Vermenagna a nord.
Il tunnel del Passo di Tenda è un tunnel sotto il passo di Tenda a un'altezza di 1.270 metri. Spesso viene confuso con il passo di Tenda 600 metri più in alto.
La strada, dal lato francese, inizia circa 200 metri prima dell'ingresso del tunnel e la copertura svanisce piuttosto rapidamente, per un totale di 46 vertiginose serpentine in cima, su una lunghezza di 7,5 km, con un dislivello di 800 m (quasi 11% in media). Sul versante nord solo gli ultimi 600 metri sul territorio francese sono una strada molto stretta e non asfaltata. Sul territorio italiano la strada è asfaltata. Questa strada inizia circa 1,5 km prima del tunnel. Ha un numero minore di tornanti (una dozzina) ma non è meno impressionante.
