Conosciuto fin dal XVIII secolo, il Grande Anfiteatro è stato oggetto di un ambizioso programma di ricerca a partire dagli anni '60, che ne ha rivelato l'architettura e le dimensioni colossali.
Con una lunghezza totale di 148 metri, l'edificio era alto circa 25 metri ed era organizzato intorno a un'arena dove si svolgevano combattimenti tra gladiatori, lotte tra animali selvatici e cacce.
Sugli spalti potevano trovare posto oltre 17.000 spettatori.
