Sfondato dai bastioni nel XIX secolo, è costituito da due archi (entrata/uscita), ciascuno dei quali è servito da un ponte levatoio. Collegava la stazione di Verdun, da cui affluivano i coscritti, al centro della città e in particolare alla caserma Giovanna d'Arco.
Negli anni Venti fu completata la distruzione dei bastioni, già indeboliti dai bombardamenti. Solo la porta Saint-Paul è stata risparmiata e messa in risalto da
solo la Porta Saint-Paul è stata risparmiata e sottolineata da stele commemorative in omaggio alla vittoria di Verdun e alla ricostruzione della città.
