La baia di Arcachon si trova nel cuore delle Landes de Gascogne. Ha una forma triangolare, delimitata da oltre 80 km di costa pianeggiante o ricoperta di dune. È in gran parte aperta sul Golfo di Biscaglia e la marea fa entrare e uscire notevoli masse d'acqua due volte al giorno. Il bacino è parzialmente isolato dall'oceano da una cintura di dune che comprende il Cap Ferret, la Dune du Pilat e il Banc d'Arguin. L'apertura all'Oceano Atlantico avviene tramite un accesso unico, i "passi", un insieme di canali di circa 3 km di larghezza che permettono la circolazione dell'acqua tra il bacino e l'oceano. Al centro del bacino si trova l'Île aux Oiseaux e le sue cabanes tchanquées.
