The German military cemetery was created by German troops on April 11, 1917, following the resumption of fighting on the initiative of the French. The cemetery contains the graves of 5,376 casualties killed during the advance of August 1914 and the Battle of Reims in September and October 1914, but the majority of the dead came from the fierce fighting in the Champagne region around the hills surrounding Reims and on the Chemin des Dames in April-May 1917, as well as the offensive and defensive battles of spring and autumn 1918.The cemetery also contains the remains of the oldest German soldier to have taken part in the conflict.
