Il 15 agosto 1914, la battaglia infuriava intorno al villaggio. Di fronte alla minaccia del capo delle forze di occupazione di distruggere il villaggio con i cannoni e di fucilare tutte le persone rinchiuse nella chiesa, alcuni di loro rivolsero le loro preghiere alla Vergine Maria e giurarono che se la Francia avesse vinto la guerra mondiale, liberato l'Alsazia dal giogo prussiano e salvato il villaggio, avrebbero eretto una statua a lei dedicata come riconoscimento. Ciò avvenne il 15 agosto 1920, anniversario della battaglia di Barembach, con l'inaugurazione della replica della grotta di Lourdes così come esiste ancora oggi.
