Il cimitero fu fondato nel 1791 in sostituzione di cimiteri precedenti.
L'attuale sito fu inaugurato nel 1815 , con diversi ampliamenti nel 1855, 1871, 1894, 1920, 1960 e 1980 (quando fu aggiunta una cripta).
È un cimitero intimo e sereno con vista sul mare, incorniciato da ortensie ombrose, tamerici e canneti. È uno dei pochi cimiteri francesi direttamente sul mare .
A volte chiamato il " Père Lachaise della Costa Azzurra ", ospita le tombe di artisti e personalità di spicco . Basti pensare a Pierre Bachelet, Eddie Barclay , noto come "l'imperatore del microsillon", la cui tomba è adornata da grandi dischi in vinile e dalla scritta "Que la fête continue" , Roger Vadim , Blandine Liszt , André Dunoyer de Segonzac e persino una principessa indiana, Bannou Pan Deï.
