El cementiri va ser fundat en 1791 , reemplaçant als cementiris anteriors.
El lloc actual va ser inaugurat en 1815 , amb diverses ampliacions en 1855, 1871, 1894, 1920, 1960 i 1980 (quan es va afegir una cripta).
És un cementiri íntim i serè amb vistes al mar, emmarcat per l'ombra d'hortènsies, tamarius i estores de joncs. És un dels pocs cementiris amb vistes directes al mar a França.
De vegades anomenat el " Père Lachaise de la Costa Blava ", alberga les tombes d'artistes i personalitats prominents . Pensem en les tombes de Pierre Bachelet, Eddie Barclay —conegut com "l'emperador del microsilló", la tomba del qual està adornada amb grans discos de vinil i la inscripció "Que la fête continue"— , Roger Vadim , Blandine Liszt , André Dunoyer de Segonzac , De. Eddie Barclay.
