Sutton Hoo, nei pressi di Woodbridge , è il sito di due cimiteri anglosassoni del VI e VII secolo, uno dei quali conteneva una nave funeraria completa di un gran numero di artefatti di elevato significato archeologico e artistico.
Il ritrovamento di Sutton Hoo è di primaria importanza per gli storici del periodo alto-medioevale inglese, in quanto getta luce su di un periodo della storia britannica a lungo posto al confine tra mito, leggenda e storia. L'utilizzo del sito ebbe il suo culmine all'epoca in cui il sovrano Redwald dell'Anglia orientale deteneva il predominio sugli Inglesi e giocava un ruolo dinamico e ambiguo nell'avvento del Cristianesimo in Inghilterra. È anche importante per la comprensione del regno anglosassone dell'Anglia orientale e, in prospettiva maggiore, di tutto il periodo.
