La Grotta di Charterhouse fu scavata per la prima volta nel 1972. Nel 1977 la Sidcot School Speleological Society aveva raggiunto la Bat Chamber, sebbene la prima grande apertura nel sistema fosse stata fatta nel 1982.
L'esplorazione attiva continua e sono state fatte scoperte nell'aprile 2008, quando furono scoperti 300 metri di passaggio abbastanza grandi per essere percorsi, e di nuovo quando il Portal Pool Sump fu superato nel maggio 2009, rivelando ulteriori 500 m di passaggio. L'esplorazione continua nel 2010 e 2011 ha portato la grotta alla sua lunghezza e profondità attuali.
