All'inizio del XIV secolo, le truppe bizantine furono sostituite dai Cavalieri Ospitalieri a Rodi. Sotto il governo del nuovo nome "Cavalieri di Rodi", la città fu trasformata in un modello dell'ideale medievale europeo. Molti dei famosi monumenti della città, incluso il Palazzo del Gran Maestro, furono costruiti durante questo periodo.
Nel 1912, Rodi fu occupata dall'Italia. Essa trasformò il palazzo in uno sfarzoso stile pseudo-medievale come residenza estiva per Vittorio Emanuele III d'Italia e, in seguito, per Benito Mussolini.
