Monemvasia significa 'ingresso singolo'. Questa qualità come penisola le conferì una posizione geografica e strategica unica. Nel VI secolo, i greci della Laconia fuggirono qui dagli slavi. Nel XIII secolo, divenne il centro commerciale del Peloponneso. Il famoso vino Malvasia veniva spedito da questo punto. Malvasia è il nome inglese di Monemvasia.
