La villa fu costruita come residenza estiva per il Lord High Commissioner degli Stati Uniti delle Isole Ionie, Frederick Adam, e la seconda moglie, originaria dell'isola, Diamantina 'Nina' Palatino, nel 1828 -1831, nonostante Adam venisse inviato a servire in India poco dopo, nel 1832. Fu usata raramente come residenza dai successivi governatori britannici.
Nel 1833 ospitò una scuola di belle arti, mentre nel 1834 il parco fu aperto al pubblico. L'imperatrice Elisabetta d'Austria vi soggiornò nel 1863, innamorandosi dell'isola, dove in seguito costruì l'Achilleion.
