La battaglia navale di Curzola, si svolse il giorno 7 settembre 1298, era una domenica, nei pressi dell'isola omonima con la vittoria dei genovesi ; da quel momento le ostilità tra le due repubbliche marinare di Genova e Venezia si affievolirono.Lo scontro si svolse durante il conflitto aperto che nell'ultimo decennio del XIII secolo vide contrapporsi le due repubbliche per garantirsi il controllo delle rotte commerciali del Mediterraneo orientale. Infatti Venezia con la quarta crociata a inizio '200 aveva acquistato una posizione predominante, ma a partire dalla metà del secolo venne fortemente contrastata da Genova con una serie di guerre inframmezzate da tregue che durarono più di 120 anni.
