Il Mayo è una delle trentadue contee tradizionali d'Irlanda e una delle ventisei contee moderne della Repubblica d'Irlanda, situata a ovest-nord-ovest dell'isola d'appartenenza, nella provincia del Connacht; il capoluogo è Castlebar.
La parola Mayo deriva dal gaelico Maigh Eo che significa letteralmente "piana dei tassi", in riferimento a una zona meridionale da cui prende il nome anche la località conosciuta oggi come Mayo Abbey.
