La città, posta in un avvallamento naturale denominato "Conca del Re", è attraversata dal fiume Coscile, a 362 m s.l.m.; è circondata dall'Appennino calabro - lucano e rappresenta il centro più popoloso del parco nazionale del Pollino. Il Monte Pollino, 2248 m, nei pressi della cittadina, è la seconda vetta più alta degli Appennini meridionali dopo la Serra Dolcedorme, 2267 m. Anche quest'ultima montagna, che fa parte della catena del Pollino, ricade - in parte - nel territorio di Castrovillari.
