Era parte della disciolta Comunità montana n. XII Barbagia - Mandrolisai. Il paese è noto in Sardegna per la produzione artigianale e il commercio del torrone. Negli ultimi anni il commercio del torrone sta superando quello che è il mercato dell'Isola per approdare in varie regioni Italiane. Discreto lo sfruttamento del patrimonio forestale che è rivolto principalmente alla produzione di legna da ardere e in piccola parte legname da opera . Irrisorio al confronto degli altri comuni sardi l'apporto economico dell'allevamento. A Tonara è anche in sviluppo il turismo montano, che in Sardegna non ha mai goduto di grosse fortune.
