Situato nella valle del Tirino, al margine sud-occidentale di un vasto piano di origine carsica compreso tra l'altopiano di Navelli e le estreme propaggini sud-orientali del massiccio del Gran Sasso d'Italia, parte del territorio del comune rientra nel territorio del Parco nazionale del Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga. Centro agricolo e pastorale di antica origine e discreta importanza, in età moderna fu dominato delle famiglie Piccolomini Todeschini, Medici e Borbone divenendo sede di un marchesato e, successivamente, di un principato.
