Il comune, posto circa 20 chilometri a nord-ovest del capoluogo, è situato presso lo sbocco delle valli di Lanzo. Il territorio è prossimo al corso della Stura di Lanzo.
La zona di Cirié e dell'Alto Canavese era abitata, sin dall'antichità, dai Salassi, una popolazione di origine celtica. Prima della dominazione romana il Canavese, come riferisce lo storico Polibio, era ricoperto da fitte boscaglie, con poche radure, qualche piccolo villaggio e rari sentieri che scorrevano tra la vegetazione.
