Situato lungo la via Appia Antica, a 13 km a ovest del capoluogo provinciale, si trova nel Salento settentrionale ed è con le sue 22 contrade fra i comuni più popolosi ed estesi dell'intero Salento.
Insieme alla vicina Ostuni, è fra le città della provincia di Brindisi in cui si riscontrano le maggiori tracce del barocco pugliese con numerosi esempi su edifici privati e religiosi. Molto caratteristico è il centro storico, con viuzze strette e numerose abitazioni in calce bianca. Il perimetro del centro storico ha curiosamente la forma di un cuore.
