È situata a sud di Pescara, con la quale confina e forma un unico agglomerato urbano. Fa parte dell'area metropolitana centro-abruzzese che supera i 350 000 abitanti, in un territorio ad alta densità abitativa.
Si estende su un territorio basso collinare e costiero, immediatamente a nord della Costa dei Trabocchi. L'antico passato della città è testimoniato dai ritrovamenti archeologici sul territorio risalenti al periodo preistorico e protostorico, italico, frentano e romano.
