Vernio è un comune italiano sparso di 6 078 abitanti, il più settentrionale della provincia di Prato. È situato presso la grande curva del fiume Bisenzio, e comprende le valli del Torrente Fiumenta, del Carigiola e la parte iniziale della valle del Setta, affluente del Reno. Il territorio comunale è attraversato perciò dallo spartiacque appenninico. Nel territorio comunale si trova, immediatamente a nord della stazione, l'imbocco meridionale della Grande Galleria dell'Appennino posta sulla linea ferroviaria Bologna-Firenze.
