L'attuale denominazione di San Paolo, in onore del pontefice bresciano Paolo VI, ha sostituito la precedente di Pedergnaga Oriano a seguito di delibera Consigliare del 25 ottobre 1963 suggellata con il Decreto del Presidente della Repubblica del 14 agosto 1964, n. 732.
Dal punto di vista idrografico, presso il laghetto di Scarpizzolo nasce lo Strone, affluente di sinistra del fiume Oglio. Diverse sono le rogge che irrigano la pianura: la roggia Cesaresca, attraversa la frazione di Oriano, mentre la Quinzana accosta la provinciale quinzanese e divide San Paolo dal territorio di Verolanuova.
