La località è attestata per la prima volta nel 1177-1184 quale "Spaurn" in un documento dei conti di Appiano a favore della Collegiata agostiniana di San Michele all'Adige.
All'interno del territorio comunale di Spormaggiore si trovano le rovine del castel Belfort , e nel centro storico si trova Cortefranca, un antico maniero risalente al Trecento.
