Situato nel Salento centrale, fa parte del parco del Negroamaro. Nel suo territorio ricade parte della struttura Ecotekne, sede di alcune facoltà dell'Università del Salento. Dal 2003 si fregia del titolo di città.
Il territorio comunale, che si estende su una superficie di 16,49 km², è caratterizzato da una morfologia prettamente pianeggiante; l'altitudine raggiunge l'altezza massima di 48 m s.l.m. Ricade nella Valle della Cupa, ossia in quella porzione di pianura, intorno al capoluogo leccese, caratterizzata da una grande depressione carsica. È situato a metà strada fra il mare Ionio e il mare Adriatico da quali dista circa 20 km.
