Centro dotato del titolo di città, è sede dell'Unione Comuni Marmilla, dell’azienda sanitaria locale e di una sezione distaccata del tribunale di Cagliari..
Il suo territorio si estende su una superficie di 84,23 chilometri quadrati ad un'altitudine media di 135 metri sul livello del mare. L’area in cui è situato il centro abitato principale e tutta l’area a sud di esso è caratterizzata da un territorio quasi esclusivamente pianeggiante di formazione quaternaria, mentre nella parte a nord del centro abitato, andando verso la Marmilla, il paesaggio inizia a diventare collinare ed è di formazione miocenica. L'altitudine minima è di 48 metri sul livello del mare, nella frazione di Sanluri Stato, mentre la massima è di 306 metri sul livello del mare, sul Bruncu Melas.
