Rivergaro è situato sulla sponda destra del fiume Trebbia, nella bassa valle, nella zona in cui alla pianura Padana si sostituiscono le prime propaggini dell'Appennino ligure e la vallata comincia a restringersi. La parte settentrionale del territorio comunale è pianeggiante, mentre la parte meridionale è collinare. Il comune fa parte della zona DOC dei colli piacentini.
