Marrubiu si trova in una delle zone più fertili della Sardegna, in un'area temperata dalla vicinanza del mare. Centro agricolo della regione del Campidano di Oristano, il territorio comprende anche una parte del Monte Arci fino alle sue pendici meridionali. Prima della grande opera di bonifica che ha determinato la nascita di Arborea divideva col vicino comune di Terralba la più grande laguna della regione oristanese, il Sassu, oggi totalmente prosciugato.
