Nel suo territorio, collocato nella Val Bregaglia, scorre il fiume Mera che crea un bacino artificiale che alimenta una centrale idroelettrica.
Proveniente dal Passo del Settimo si ricorda il passaggio nel 612 del santo missionario ed abate irlandese san Colombano, egli dopo le missioni dell'evangelizzazione degli Alemanni anche in Svizzera e lungo il lago di Costanza con varie fondazioni monastiche, lasciò il monaco Gallo e risalendo il fiume Reno, il Reno Posteriore fino a Bivio scese con i suoi monaci in Italia.
Il comune fu creato dai Grigioni nel 1584 e reso effettivo una generazione dopo il 10 dicembre 1608 quando fu effettivamente tracciato il confine che lo divise da Piuro.
