Cagliari è un comune italiano di 148 508 abitanti, capoluogo della regione autonoma della Sardegna. La sua città metropolitana conta 418 828 abitanti ed è la più piccola d’Italia.
Sede universitaria e arcivescovile e città dalla storia plurimillenaria, è il centro amministrativo storico dell'isola essendo stata, sotto la denominazione di Caralis, capoluogo della provincia di Sardinia et Corsica durante il periodo romano e successivamente capitale del Regno di Sardegna, dal 1324 al 1720, e poi dal 1798 al 1814.
Il suo porto è classificato "internazionale" per via della sua importanza; svolge funzioni commerciali, industriali, turistiche e di servizio per passeggeri.
