Il territorio di Villanova d'Albenga sorge alla confluenza dei torrenti Arroscia e Lerrone. Tra le vette del territorio il monte Pagliassa , la punta Gazzulin e il poggio Barbera .
La zona dall'XI secolo fu in possesso dei monaci benedettini dell'abbazia di San Martino dell'isola Gallinara assieme a tutto il territorio ingauno.
