Il terremoto del Val di Noto del 9 e dell'11 gennaio 1693 rappresenta, assieme ai terremoti del 1169 e del 1908, l'evento catastrofico di maggiori dimensioni che abbia colpito la Sicilia orientale in tempi storici. Secondo recenti studi in realtà si potrebbe trattare di due eventi distinti.
Con una magnitudo momento pari a 7,32, è considerato il terremoto più forte mai registrato nell'intero territorio italiano.. Risulta inoltre essere il ventitreesimo terremoto più disastroso della storia dell'umanità, almeno tra quelli storicamente accertati.
