L'Accademia nazionale di San Luca è un'associazione di artisti di Roma, fondata nel 1593 da Federico Zuccari, che ne fu anche primo direttore , con il presupposto di elevare il lavoro degli artisti al di sopra del semplice artigianato.
Durante i primi anni di vita, l'associazione finì nell'orbita del patronato papale, che dominò e controllò l'istituzione. L'accademia venne intitolata nei primi del '600 all'evangelista San Luca dopo la sua nomina a protettore di tutti i pittori. Secondo la leggenda, infatti, Luca fu l'autore del primo ritratto della Vergine Maria.
