Sorge nella parte centro-orientale del Salento, a 3 km dall'oasi protetta dei laghi Alimini e a 9 km da Otranto. Dal 2009 aderisce all'Associazione Borghi Autentici d'Italia. All'inizio del XIX secolo, insieme a Sogliano Cavour, Cursi, Cutrofiano ed agli odierni comuni della Grecìa Salentina, formava parte dei Decatría Choría , cioè dei tredici paesi di Terra d'Otranto che conservavano la lingua e le tradizioni greche.
