L'assedio di Siracusa si riferisce alle operazioni belliche messe in atto dalle truppe romane di Marcello sotto le mura della polis di Siracusa nel 212 a.C. Gli attacchi si svolsero per vie terrestri e per vie marittime, ma in entrambi i casi l'esercito di Roma incontrò l'insuperabile difesa pensata ed elaborata dallo scienziato e matematico Archimede. Durante l'assedio Ippocrate cercò rinforzi cartaginesi presso Eraclea Minoa ottenendo alcune vittorie contro i Romani. Epicide invece rimase a Siracusa, mantenendo sino all'ultimo una strenua difesa.
