La chiesa e il convento dei Frati Minori Francescani risalgono al 1364 .
A partire dal XVII secolo il monastero venne ampliato e ristrutturato . A causa del crollo della navata centrale, la chiesa venne chiusa al culto nel 1927 e sottoposta ad una serie di restauri negli anni '70.
Il monastero fu adibito ad ospedale e oggi ospita la sede di rappresentanza del Centro Scientifico Culturale Ettore Maiorana.
La Chiesa di San Francesco è conosciuta anche come Chiesa dell'Immacolata, perché ospita la statua della Madonna Immacolata, che viene portata in processione ogni anno l'8 dicembre.
