L ' església i el monestir dels frares menors franciscans daten del 1364 .
A partir del segle XVII el monestir va ser ampliat i reformat . A causa de l' enfonsament de la nau, l'església va ser tancada al culte l'any 1927 i sotmesa a una sèrie de restauracions als anys setanta.
El monestir va ser utilitzat com a hospital i avui acull la seu representativa del Centre Cultural Científic Ettore Maiorana.
L'església de San Francesc també és coneguda com l'Església de la Immaculada Concepció, perquè alberga l'estàtua de la Verge Immaculada, que es porta en processó cada any el 8 de desembre.
