Il ponte è anche conosciuto come il Nuovo Ponte dagli abitanti della città. Il Ponte Vecchio è invece il Passerelle del 1861.
La costruzione è durata dal 1900 al 1908. Quando il ponte fu completato, era il più grande ponte ad arco di pietra del mondo. Il ponte attraversa un dirupo, nel quale scorre anche la Pétrusse. Dalla recente ristrutturazione del 2014 al 2017, sotto il viadotto è sospeso un ponte separato per pedoni e ciclisti, che si immette in una biforcazione a T su entrambe le teste di terra.
