Tra Olst e Wijhe, nelle aree golenante dell'IJssel, si trova la riserva naturale Duursche Waarden. Nel 1989 è stato realizzato qui un importante progetto di sviluppo naturale. Questo ha reso le Duursche Waarden la prima area nei Paesi Bassi in cui la natura lungo il fiume ha riacquistato più spazio. Poiché i livelli dell'acqua variano di più, torna anche un ecosistema più variegato (e adeguato al fiume) nelle aree golenante. L'area stessa non è completamente accessibile.
