Zwischen Olst und Wijhe, in den Auen der IJssel, liegt das Naturschutzgebiet Duursche Waarden. 1989 wurde hier ein großes Naturentwicklungsprojekt durchgeführt. Damit wurden die Duursche Waarden das erste Gebiet in den Niederlanden, in dem die Natur entlang des Flusses wieder mehr Raum bekam. Da die Wasserstände stärker variieren, kehrt auch ein vielfältigeres (und zum Fluss passendes) Ökosystem in die Aue zurück. Das Gebiet selbst ist nicht vollständig zugänglich. Doch gibt es genug Möglichkeiten, die Natur zu genießen. Es gibt einen Gummistiefelweg zwischen der Vogelhütte und dem Aussichtsturm bei Fortmond.
