Nel 1188 viene menzionata una proprietà a Hemmen. L'omonima signoria entrò alla fine del XIV secolo in possesso della famiglia Van Lynden, quando Elisabetta di Doornick sposò nel 1375 il cavaliere Steven van Lynden. Questa famiglia rimase in possesso della signoria di Hemmen fino al 1931, quando Frans Godard van Lynden van Hemmen - l'ultimo membro della famiglia - morì senza figli. I suoi beni passarono per testamento al Lijndensche Fonds per la Chiesa e la Missione.
