Il nome storico di Haastrecht è Havekesdrecht. Nel 1108 è stata registrata per la prima volta una menzione. Haastrecht sorse attorno al 1100 nel luogo in cui il ruscello torboso Vlist sfocia nell'Hollandsche IJssel.
In questa abitazione fu successivamente costruito un castello, di cui sono state ritrovate le fondamenta.
In base alla posizione, Haastrecht ricevette i diritti di città nel 1396. Una importante rotta di navigazione era attraverso la Vlist verso l'Hollandsche IJssel. A Haastrecht si trovava la chiusa che collegava entrambi i fiumi. Questa chiusa fu successivamente distrutta da Dordrecht, a causa della concorrenza per le entrate del pedaggio della navigazione.
Gli edifici iconici a Haastrecht sono il municipio del 1618, il ponte levatoio sull'IJssel del 1883 e la chiesa Riformata, i cui primi parti risalgono al XIII secolo.
Sull'Hollandsche IJssel verso Gouda si trovava il monastero a Stein in cui Desiderius Erasmus visse per alcuni anni.
